I’m interning with NORML this summer because I believe deeply in the need for cannabis law reform.

Having witnessed firsthand the profound medical benefits of cannabis in treating various disorders, as well as the unjust criminalization of people and patients for simple possession, I became passionate to join efforts and organizations like NORML that seek to undo these harmful policies and advocate for consumer-oriented marketplaces.

I am currently a rising undergraduate senior at Virginia Commonwealth University where I am pursuing a degree in political science with a concentration in international relations. My strong interest lies in public policy and law, particularly as they relate to cannabis. While the momentum for federal legalization seems inevitable to some, I’ve come to realize through my studies that progress is not guaranteed. It requires dedicated advocacy and legislative efforts, which NORML embodies and effectuates. 

So far during my internship, I have assisted with mailing membership cards, directing medical cannabis patients to resources, tracking legislation and candidates’ views, and collaborating on media projects with fellow interns. The internship is flexible and receptive to the interests of each intern. It has been a fantastic experience to work with such a knowledgeable and inspiring team of staff this summer. 

This internship represents a crucial step toward realizing my goal of contributing meaningfully to the ongoing fight for justice and equity in cannabis policy.
